Fans of Southampton Football Club are still buzzing after their team was promoted to the Barclays Premier League at the weekend. According to Bbc.co.uk, the Saints took second place in the nPower Championship and gained automatic promotion to the Premier League, thanks to a 4-0 victory over Coventry City on April 28th. Nigel Adkins’ side knew that they had to win to avoid being pegged back by their nearest challengers West Ham United; a team that was just two points behind whilst going into the last day of the season. However, dailymail.co.uk reports that any fears of missing out on promotion were soon eased by two goals in the opening 20 minutes from striker Billy Sharp and centre-half Jose Fonte. Second-half goals from Jos Hooiveld and Adam Lallana put the icing on the cake for the Saints, who may now be looking forward to taking on the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea in the top tier next season. Saints fans will now be able to brush off the fact that they failed to beat their main rivals Portsmouth over the course of the season. Many will be hoping that Nigel Adkins will be given plenty of funds to build a squad capable of taking on the Premier League next season. Author: Joe Elvin Date 1st May 2012
